Week 8 Assignment 1

I use context clues from the rest of the sentence to figure out what the unfamiliar word is.  I start creating an image in my head of a hoatzin to help myself develop meaning of the word.  I find descriptive words in each sentence to help add to the picture in my head.  From my understanding a hoatzin is some sort of winged creature that lives near the water.

Okay so after researching hoatzin I found out it is a South American bird.  I did NOT think bird at all given the description which now surprises me.  The bird is much smaller than the creature I imagined when I was reading the paragraph.  I was almost thinking dragon-like creature as I read the paragraph.  Maybe I just have a very active imagination.  The choice of words in the paragraph built the animal up to be a much larger and more fierce creature than I discovered a hoatzin is in my research.

  1. I like that you mentioned visualizing as part of your comprehension process. This is a very important strategy teachers try to teach their students. Without visualizing it becomes difficult to comprehend texts at times. When I read the passage I was imagining a bat like creature. :)
